Botox Specialist
We all want to look the way we did in college. However, because of decreased collagen production, sometimes skin can begin to wrinkle, making us look older than we feel inside. Botox®, an innovation in skin care, works to tighten problem wrinkles and crow’s feet to make men and women look and feel years younger. If you’re considering Botox, contact Ophthalmologist Jane Semel, MD, from Semel Vision Care and Aesthetics in El Segundo, California.

Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country. Quick, safe, and effective, Botox reduces or eliminates facial lines and wrinkles for up to six months with no downtime and little to no discomfort. By targeting one of the underlying causes of wrinkles, Botox temporarily blocks chemical signals that cause the muscles in your face to contract, reducing muscle activity in the treated area, allowing those muscles to relax, and substantially reducing the appearance of unwanted lines on your face.

During treatment, Dr. Semel inserts a series of small injections in the problem area. After that, the procedure is finished. Botox is simple, and only after a short appointment, it enhances your appearance.

What conditions can Botox treat?

Botox is effective at treating most types of wrinkles in the skin, including:

  • Smile lines
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet

Botox treats other conditions unrelated to wrinkles, such as hyperhidrosis, which is characterized by excessive sweating anywhere on the body. Other conditions Botox can treat include:

  • Cervical dystonia
  • Lazy eye
  • Muscle contractures
  • Chronic migraines
  • Bladder dysfunction

Consult with Dr. Semel before using Botox for any purpose.

Are there any risks associated with Botox?

Botox injections are safe, but they do come with some risks. Possible side effects of Botox include:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising
  • Headache
  • Droopy eyelid
  • Crooked Smile
  • Eye dryness

It's doubtful but possible for the effects of the active ingredient in Botox, botulinum toxin, to spread to other parts of the body. Call Dr. Semel if, after a Botox treatment, you experience:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Vision Problems
  • Trouble speaking
  • Trouble breathing

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Dr. Semel may recommend against using Botox.

Why is choosing the right doctor important for Botox?

Doctors who aren’t familiar or skilled with the technique of injecting Botox could leave their patient’s faces looking “frozen.” By taking the time to talk with each candidate before beginning the injection process and through extensive experience injecting Botox into hundreds of patients, the physicians at Semel Vision Care and Aesthetics are experts in administering the Botox treatment.

If you’re interested in restoring your youthful-looking skin, contact Dr. Semel today, so together, you can decide if Botox is right for you.
